Government Evacuated Students as Hurricane Melissa Strengthens
As Hurricane Melissa continues to gain strength across the Caribbean, the Government of St Kitts and Nevis has successfully coordinated the evacuation of nationals studying in Jamaica — a move widely praised for its speed, organisation, and care.
A chartered flight carrying twenty-seven students departed Kingston on Saturday evening, routing through Turks and Caicos before arriving safely in St Kitts on Sunday, October 26, 2025.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew said the Government’s swift decision reflected its unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of nationals abroad. “When the safety of our citizens is at stake, we move quickly,” he noted, emphasising that protecting Kittitians and Nevisians remains a top priority wherever they may be.
For those who chose to remain in Jamaica, the Government worked with the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the St Kitts and Nevis Student Association (SKNSA) to ensure their safety. Students have been relocated to a secure, hurricane-ready hotel, with official shelters available if further precautions are required.
Authorities continue to monitor developments across Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, maintaining constant communication with regional partners and CARICOM institutions. Nationals in affected territories are being urged to stay alert, follow official guidance, and remain in contact with their embassies.
The swift coordination underscores St Kitts and Nevis’ growing reputation for proactive crisis response — ensuring that, even far from home, no national is left behind.
