Hurricane Erin Moves On, But Eyes Still On The Atlantic

Hurricane Erin just spun past the Leewards as a monster Category 5. It stayed out in the Atlantic but still came close enough to drench St Kitts, Nevis and neighbours with heavy rain and strong winds.

Now that Erin’s moving off, forecasters already watching the next threat. According to the National Hurricane Center, a tropical wave in the central Atlantic is stirring up a big patch of messy showers and storms. Conditions look ripe, and it could form into a tropical depression by the weekend. Right now, they’re giving it a 60 percent chance of development as it pushes west at about 20 mph, possibly near the Leewards by Friday.

And if that wasn’t enough, meteorologists tracking yet another wave further east near Cabo Verde. That system packing storms of its own and might strengthen in the short term, but forecasters say it could hit tougher conditions later in the week.

Bottom line: Erin gone, but the Atlantic still busy. The region staying on high alert as hurricane season hit peak.
