Officials Crack Down — Smoking in Public Still Illegal Across SKN

Basseterre talk heating up this week after officials reminded everyone that smoking in public spaces is still very much illegal across St Kitts and Nevis — and yes, that includes cigarettes, cigars, cannabis and even vapes.

The reminder came from the National Council on Drug Abuse Prevention (NCDAP), backed by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, after what they described as a “worrying rise” in people lighting up outside designated areas.

Chair of the NCDAP, Travis Rogers, didn’t mince words:

“We do not want people going around blowing smoke in people’s faces.”

Officials made it clear that while cannabis use was decriminalised, it was not legalised, meaning there are still strict limits in place. If you’re caught smoking in public, you could face a $500 ticket, 20 hours of community service, or even five days in prison if you refuse to comply.

Director of the NCDAP Secretariat, Karimu Byron-Caines, added that the law isn’t about punishment but respect and balance. She said the regulations are there to protect everyone — especially those with health conditions — and to make sure that public spaces remain safe and comfortable for all.

“Let us respect each other. It’s not legal to smoke in public spaces, and I really hope people hear and share this message.”

Officials say the grace period for “education first” is now over. Enforcement is ramping up as authorities move into full compliance mode.

For those still unsure what’s allowed and what’s not, the government’s Cannabis Clarity website — www.cannabisclarityskn.com — lays it all out clearly.

Bottom line: smoke responsibly, stay within the law, and keep the air clean for everyone.
