Police Warn “Ghost Nun” Prankster: Wearing Masks in Public is a Crime in SKN

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) has issued a sharp reminder to the public after a person dressed as a “ghost nun” was spotted walking through neighbourhoods — and even entering a primary school — in what many assumed was an early Halloween prank.

The Force confirmed that while the incident may have been meant as a joke, it caused public alarm and broke local law.

In a public statement posted to Facebook, police made it clear: under Part 3, Section 8 (5) and (7) of the Small Charges Act, it is an offence to wear or possess a mask in public without a lawful excuse, except during Carnival or Culturama. The penalties are no small matter — up to $5,000 in fines or one year in prison.

“The RSCNPF appreciates public creativity and humour,” the statement read, “but such actions must not cause fear or distress or violate the law.”

According to reports, the individual in question — dressed in a full ghostly nun outfit — was seen walking near residential areas and later appeared at a local school, leaving both children and staff startled. Several videos and photos quickly surfaced online, sparking a wave of amusement and annoyance in equal measure.

While some social media users dismissed the act as “harmless Halloween fun,” others backed the police warning, pointing out that masks and costumes in public have been restricted for decades due to concerns about safety and anonymity.

As the spooky season approaches, the police are urging everyone to check the law before they dress up, especially outside of officially sanctioned events.

“A lawful excuse,” the Force clarified, “could include written permission from the Commissioner of Police.”

In other words, unless you’re part of a parade or have formal approval, that costume could land you in real trouble.

The RSCNPF closed its statement with a note of caution — and just a hint of dry humour:
“Stay safe. Stay lawful.”
