SKN welcomes Dr Julius Garvey
History stepped back onto Federation soil this week as Dr Julius Garvey, son of Pan-African icon Marcus Mosiah Garvey, arrived in St Kitts and Nevis. His visit was led by Deputy Prime Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley and positioned as a powerful reminder of Garvey’s enduring message of cultural pride, unity and self-empowerment across the African diaspora.
Dr Garvey’s presence connects the present to a legacy that shaped generations. His father stood on Market Street back in 1937, addressing Kittitians and Nevisians directly about self-determination. Now, almost 90 years later, his son retraces those very steps.
The main moment comes Wednesday, 6 August, when remembrance ceremonies will take place, following Garvey’s 1937 route—from Pump Bay and Fig Tree through to the Mutual Improvement Society Building on Market Street. It will be both a commemoration and a call to carry forward the ideals of progress, empowerment and unity.
This is more than a ceremonial event. It’s an opportunity for citizens to honour a shared history, reflect on Garvey’s influence and recommit to building stronger communities rooted in pride and purpose.
