Nevis Rebuilds K-9 Unit With Three New Dogs to Boost Security

Premier Mark Brantley has announced that Nevis has reconstituted its K-9 unit with the acquisition of three specially trained dogs — a move he describes as a “huge leap forward” for law enforcement on the island.

The investment, coordinated by Permanent Secretary to the Premier, Wakely Daniel, was made in partnership with the Ministry of National Security in St Kitts and the Commissioner of Police. Though national security falls under federal jurisdiction, the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) took the initiative to strengthen security on the island through this direct contribution.

“This significant expenditure was made to assist our hardworking law enforcement officers on Nevis and better enhance the safety and security of our beloved island,” Brantley said in his statement.

The premier noted that the three dogs will provide vital support in crime detection, narcotics control, and public safety. K-9 units have long been recognised as force multipliers for police operations, offering skills that extend beyond the capacity of human officers alone.

Brantley added that the move reflects the CCM-led government’s commitment to safeguarding Nevisian communities, even in areas where direct responsibility lies with the federal administration.

“Despite the NIA having no responsibility for national security, we continue to do our best to strengthen the security of Nevis and, by extension, the Federation,” Brantley said.

The announcement has been widely welcomed as a proactive step to reinforce policing on the island.
