Premier Brantley Bids Warm Farewell to Cuban Ambassador, Praises Years of Friendship and Cooperation
Premier Mark Brantley has paid tribute to His Excellency David Rivero Pérez, the outgoing Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to St Kitts and Nevis, thanking him for his years of friendship, partnership, and commitment to the people of Nevis.
Ambassador Pérez, who is completing his four-year tenure in the Federation, made a farewell courtesy visit to the Premier’s office before returning to Havana. He was joined by Counselor Ivón Tomé for the occasion.
Brantley described the ambassador as “a very good friend to Nevis,” crediting him with deepening collaboration in key areas such as health and education. He noted that many young Nevisians are currently studying in Cuba through the country’s scholarship programme, preparing to return home as qualified medical professionals.
“You have been a good friend to the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, but also a very good friend to Nevis,” Brantley said. “We have been blessed to have you, and you will always have a home here.”
Ambassador Pérez reflected fondly on his time in the Federation, describing the relationship between Cuba and the Caribbean as “excellent and enduring.” He highlighted the work of Cuban doctors at Alexandra Hospital, commending their contribution to the local health system and reaffirming Cuba’s commitment to continue sending professionals and training opportunities to Nevis.
He also revealed that the 2026 scholarship programme will include six new medical scholarships for students from St Kitts and Nevis, with additional openings for other disciplines such as engineering.
During his farewell visit, Ambassador Pérez met with Health Minister Senator Jahnel Nisbett, who expressed gratitude for Cuba’s continued support through the Cuban Medical Brigade, calling the partnership “tangible and invaluable.”
“Our healthcare system is stronger because of Cuba’s support,” Nisbett said. “Without the assistance of Cuban professionals, we would not be able to provide the level of care we do today.”
The ambassador also took time to meet with members of the Cuban Medical Brigade stationed at Alexandra Hospital, thanking them for their dedication and service to the people of Nevis.
His departure marks the end of a highly productive term that strengthened ties between Nevis and Cuba — a partnership built on solidarity, shared values, and mutual respect that continues to benefit generations of Nevisians.
