SKN Ranked Among World’s Most Overcrowded Tourist Destinations

SKN has been named one of the world’s most overcrowded tourist destinations, according to a new global list published by WION.

The twin-island Federation ranked fifth overall, joining global hotspots such as Vatican City, Andorra, San Marino, the Bahamas and Monaco. With a population of fewer than 47,000, the country welcomes close to 900,000 visitors annually – almost 20 times its resident population.

Cruise ships alone bring thousands of passengers into Basseterre’s harbour on peak days, with popular beaches, trails and cultural sites often filled to capacity. While tourism remains the backbone of the economy, the report highlights the challenge of balancing visitor demand with the small islands’ limited space and resources.

Neighbouring Antigua and Barbuda was also included on the list, ranking sixth, while the Bahamas placed fourth. The findings underscore a growing concern across the Caribbean about carrying capacity, infrastructure, and sustainable growth in the face of surging tourism.

For Saint Kitts and Nevis, the recognition is a reminder of both the islands’ global appeal and the importance of managing tourism in a way that protects local communities and the environment while keeping the visitor experience world-class.
