St Kitts and Nevis Marks 42 Years of Independence

Today, September 19, 2025, Saint Kitts and Nevis proudly celebrates the 42nd anniversary of its independence from Britain, a moment that continues to symbolise the resilience, strength and determination of the Federation’s people.

Independence Day traditions began early with the national flag-raising ceremony at Warner Park in Basseterre, mirrored by a similar ceremony in Charlestown, Nevis. These official events were followed by a military parade featuring the St Kitts and Nevis Defence Force, police and cadet corps.

Across both islands, communities are celebrating in their own way, with cultural performances, concerts, street parades and traditional dishes highlighting the rich heritage of the nation.

Since gaining independence on September 19, 1983, Saint Kitts and Nevis has continued to evolve as a modern Caribbean state while keeping alive the spirit of unity and self-determination that fuelled its journey to sovereignty.

As the Federation reflects on 42 years of progress, this year’s Independence Day is a call to honour the past while looking with confidence toward the future.
