Taiwan Partnership Powers Recycling Breakthrough in SKN
SKN is celebrating a major milestone in its push towards sustainability, with the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) preparing to export its third container of recycled plastic bricks before the end of 2025.
The achievement was highlighted during a site visit on September 11 by Ambassador Edward Tao of Taiwan, who toured the recycling plant alongside Embassy Secretary Tina Lin, Taiwan Technical Mission Leader Roy Lo and Project Manager Joyce Chang. They were welcomed by SWMC General Manager Nelvin Maynard, who credited Taiwan’s technical expertise for transforming the Federation’s waste management capacity over the past four years.
Mr Maynard projected increased exports in 2026 as the plant expands operations with support from the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF). He praised the partnership for turning household refuse into sustainable resources that can generate both revenue and environmental benefits.
Ambassador Tao commended the progress, pointing to Taiwan’s own experience in turning recycling into successful enterprises. He also announced a National School Recycling Competition to encourage students to embrace environmental stewardship and spark new ideas in green innovation.
The recycling programme is directly linked to Saint Kitts and Nevis’ Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA), strengthening the country’s leadership in green technology and resource management. With ongoing bilateral cooperation, the initiative is being hailed as a model of how partnerships can deliver tangible benefits for future generations.
