St Kitts Set To Get Its First MRI Machine In Just Weeks
Big news for healthcare in the Federation — Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew has confirmed that the long-awaited MRI machine for St Kitts is finally on the way, with construction of its new home set to wrap up in the next four weeks.
Speaking on Freedom FM on August 28, the Prime Minister explained that St Kitts had never had a dedicated facility to house such critical equipment. To make it possible, a special building had to be constructed at the JNF General Hospital. That project is now in its final stretch.
Why It Matters
The MRI machine — being supplied by global medical giant Philips — will transform the island’s diagnostic capacity. Until now, patients have had to travel overseas, sometimes at huge expense, to get MRI scans. Soon, they’ll be able to access this service right at home.
Proud Moment For Healthcare
“This will take our diagnostic ability to another level,” Dr Drew said, noting that offering MRI services locally places St Kitts among the growing number of small island states with advanced medical tools. The Minister of Health added that this upgrade will especially benefit those battling non-communicable diseases (NCDs), a major health challenge in the region.
Final Touches
Philips has been closely monitoring the construction process, and once the enclosure is completed, officials will carry out final checks before installation. Community members are expected to have access to the service within weeks.
For many families, this means no more expensive trips abroad for essential scans. For the country, it’s a step toward stronger, more independent healthcare.
